Heritage meets modern hospitality as the Doutta Galla undergoes a transformation behind its red doors
The wait is nearly over, the Doutta Galla Hotel, affectionately known as The Doot, is preparing to reopen its doors ahead of Cup Week. After closing for major renovations in November 2024, the much-loved Kensington local will soon be back with a fresh new look that embraces its heritage while serving up modern hospitality, the same soul and big plans for the seasons ahead.
And it is not just a new look! The Doot has new owners – Kickon Group (The Terminus Hotel, The Continental, Pincho Disco), led by Craig Shearer is joined by newly appointed Pub Partner Ben Lougoon and a group of investors including Aussie Actor Travis Fimmel and Ex AFL stars Luke Hodge and Andrew Walker.
Guests can expect major changes they are sure to embrace with the massive facelift, including brand new bars on all floors, including on levels one and two, which were previously hotel rooms and two new bars on the ground floor.
On entry, guests will find The Doot will offers a dual space, with one side of the pub a bar and the other a restaurant. Diners can expect a menu rooted in seasonality and substance, serving elevated pub classics alongside an extensive steak menu. Bold flavours, generous portions, paired with a buzzing bar atmosphere.
Upstairs, on the top two floors, a series of versatile function spaces in the style of a modern beer hall will follow in the months following re-opening. Designed as an extension of the downstairs bar, as well as hosting all types of private events from birthday parties to corporate events and family get-togethers to celebration dinners. The void within the two levels will open up the spaces, allowing plenty of natural light in and will keep the bustling vibe flowing throughout.
True to its history, the iconic red doors will remain, a nod to the venue’s legacy as a cornerstone of Kensington life since 1889. For generations, The Doot has been more than just a pub, it’s been a meeting place, a pre-race pit stop, and a hub for stories, celebrations and community connection.
The Doot’s latest chapter is soon to begin, with its story continuing everything it has traditionally been loved for, but with renewed energy, late-night music and a 3am licence – cementing its place as both a neighbourhood local and a go-to destination.
